Egypt delivered its official bid dossier to the International Handball Federation for candidacy to host the 2027 Handball World Championship, during an official ceremony attended by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Egyptian federation officials, and a delegation from the International Handball Federation. The Egyptian bid rests on three main pillars: the successful hosting experience of the 2021 championship, which witnessed exceptional public turnout and widespread international acclaim; the advanced sports infrastructure distributed across several cities; and comprehensive government guarantees for organisation and financing.

The bid includes the announcement of Egypt’s readiness to invest over 400 million dollars in tournament-related infrastructure projects, encompassing the development of six major arenas in Cairo, Alexandria, Port Said, Hurghada, the New Administrative Capital, and several Upper Egyptian cities. The bid also pledges the construction of a world-class athletes’ village, improvements to the transport network between tournament cities, and the guaranteed readiness of airports to accommodate sports delegations from around the world.

The Minister of Sport affirmed that Egypt’s hosting of the 2021 tournament under the extraordinary circumstances imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated the efficiency of the Egyptian organisational system and its ability to adapt to challenges, adding that the 2027 hosting would be entirely different as it would allow a full opportunity for Egyptian and global audiences to celebrate this major sporting event. He stressed that Egypt is among the few countries that possess both the experience and the infrastructure necessary to organise such global championships.

Reports indicate that Egypt is competing for this bid against Denmark and Croatia, both of which enjoy deep-rooted handball traditions and distinguished infrastructure. However, Egypt’s strong card lies in its strategic geographic reach, which makes Egyptian hosting an opportunity to expand the handball base in the Arab and African regions—an objective that aligns with the International Federation’s strategy for expansion into emerging markets.

The International Handball Federation is expected to announce its hosting decision during its annual meeting in September 2026. Egyptian officials express full confidence in the bid’s competitive strength, citing the high-level political support, clear financial commitments, and an impressive record in international sports hosting. Winning hosting rights would represent an achievement that further cements Egypt’s sporting standing on the map of major international events.
